Espanola council has agreed to begin negotiations with Domtar regarding insurance for enthusiasts to play pickleball at the Espanola Golf & Country Club.
Domtar owns the property and the current lease agreement with the golf course has expired.
The town’s insurer is recommending a new lease agreement be drafted by both Domtar and the golf club to share the burden of insurance coverage with the town.
A benefactor has come forward to provide $70,000 to upgrade the tennis and pickleball courts, which share the same space with Domtar also donating $2,500 towards the retrofit.
Talks will now begin to reach a deal to allow for the upgrade to begin by the fall with a grand reopening slated for next Spring.
