Protocols for schools expected next week
Premier Doug Ford says he’s confident the government’s plan for a return to in-class learning in September will allow schools to reopen safely.
Ford says details of the program will be released next week and will include increased protocols so children and staff are protected including better ventilation in school buildings.
The Registered Nurses Association of Ontario is asking the Premier for mandatory masking, the mandatory vaccination of teachers and other staff, and smaller class sizes as part of the program.
Seniors locked in rooms – manager charged
The 40-year-old manager of a retirement home near Oshawa has been charged after handles were removed from the doors of some residents’ rooms.
Durham Regional Police say they began their investigation in February after complaints that the home’s management had removed the door handles to keep residents who had tested positive for COVID-19 in their rooms.
Tawab Karimi is facing two counts of forcible confinement.
The company running the home says the action violated their policies, and the handles were restored as soon as they found out.
Lockdown extended in Australia
Police in Sydney, Australia, has asked the federal government to deploy 300 soldiers to help them enforce the city’s coronavirus lockdown.
Sydney’s five million residents have seen their lockdown extended for another four weeks, after the failure of the latest five-week shutdown to limit an increase in COVID-19 infections.
Officials reported a pandemic high in new cases today.
Residents of Australia’s largest city are only supposed to leave their homes for essential work, medical reasons, exercise, and to shop for food.
But there’s been a widespread violation of the rules.
Numbers rising in Japan – but Olympic athletes are fine
The Japanese government is expressing alarm, as Tokyo sets another record for new cases of COVID-19.
There were almost 38-hundred new diagnoses reported today and officials say there seems to be a lack of a sense of urgency among the residents of the capital.
They say people are still roaming the streets despite requests they remain at home.
However they add that, at this point, there’s no major spread among Olympic athletes now in the city for the summer games.
