Elliot Lake swimmer raising money for Easter Seals

Elliot Lake’s Aquatic Club S5 classified para-swimmer Alyssa Hebert participated in the 14th annual Bushukah Bring on the Bay Open Water Swim earlier this month raising funds for Easter Seals.

Serge Hebert says on Sunday July 18th, Alyssa completed the 1.5km swim in a time of 44:23.05 swimming to the Rock and back to the beach five times.

He adds she raised over $600 so far and anyone wanting to honour her effort can visit the website to donate.

Serge adds The Bring on the Bay Open Water Swim usually takes place in Ottawa, but this year due to the pandemic, the annual event went virtual allowing Alyssa to participate for the first time.

“For the past 98 years, Easter Seals Ontario has been a champion for children and youth with physical disabilities from all ethnic and religious backgrounds.  Their programs and services include funding for essential accessibility and mobility equipment, such as wheelchairs, walkers, lifts and ramps, as well as information resources for families.

“They also own and operate two fully accessible summer camps and are recognized as an industry leader in providing specialized camping programs for kids with physical disabilities.”

Alyssa has been attending Easter Seals Camp Merrywood since she was nine years old.

“Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the Easter Seals camps have been closed for the 2020 and 2021 summers.  The campers are at too high of risk if they contract the Covid 19 virus.

“However, Alyssa decided this was the perfect opportunity to give back to the organization which has provided her with amazing summer experiences for six years. Alyssa is the first para-swimmer to participate in the Bring on the Bay Open Water 1.5km Swim.”
