Elliot Lake council considering accommodation tax

Elliot Lake council will be reviewing the idea of a municipal accommodation tax once again.
Back in November 2019, the idea was discussed about adding four percent as a Municipal Accommodation Tax to hotels, motels, lodges and bed & breakfasts in the city.
The pandemic delayed any movement on the idea until now with Economic Development Manager Ashten Vlahovich bringing a follow-up report to the council’s virtual meeting this evening.
She is suggesting the city set up a not-for-profit corporation that would oversee how the money would be spent for tourist development.
She adds the city has one hotel with 52 rooms, one lodge with 12 rooms and nine identified B&Bs, which could bring in at least $70,000 a year in funding.
Her final recommendation also includes talks with the Ontario Restaurant Hotel & Motel Association, which would be responsible for the collection of the tax.
The meeting will be live-streamed at 7 pm tonight on the city’s website.
