SIU clears officer after man injured during arrest in Huron Shores

The director of the Special Investigations Unit Joseph Martino has cleared an East Algoma OPP officer after a suspect suffered injuries during his arrest on February 28th in Huron Shores following a domestic dispute.

Marino says shortly after his arrest, a 60-year-old male suspect was taken to the hospital in Blind River, then the Sault Area Hospital for treatment of a dislocation of his right elbow.

He adds after the suspect was released from custody on March 2, attended a clinic where he was diagnosed and treated for several rib fractures.

However, Marino adds the suspect had been drinking, was in a belligerent mood when arrested and had a knife on his person leading to the officer’s actions in bringing him under control as quickly as possible.

Martino concludes there are no reasonable grounds to believe that the subject officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the male’s arrest and injuries.
