Elliot Lake planning changes to OP and Zoning Bylaw

The City of Elliot Lake is looking at possible changes to its Official Plan and Zoning Bylaw to address a housing shortage in the community.

According to city clerk Natalie Bray the notice has been posted on the city website to allow for anyone to make a written signed submission as to whether they are for or against proposed amendments.

She says the meeting will focus on proposed amendments by removing references to ‘secondary units’ and replace them with ‘additional residential units’ that comply with recent changes to the Ontario Planning Act.

That in turn, will allow the city more residential units in all single-detached, semi-detached, and row-house housing units and even additional separate structures on private property anywhere within the city limits.

She emphasizes the additional units would have to meet all provincial standards.

They’re needed to meet new provincial standards for additional residential units.

The meeting is set for July 12th at 6:30 pm on Zoom and can be accessed on the city’s website.

Submissions will be accepted by the City Clerk prior to the meeting.

Anyone interested in attending the meeting or providing comments can contact the Clerk’s Department by phone (705-848-2287, ext. 2103) or by email.

The Planning Act was recently amended as a result of Ontario Bill 108 – More Homes, More Choice Act, 2019, which gives Ontario municipalities another tool to use in developing housing options, with an emphasis on affordability.
