Central Manitoulin council turns down offer to refurbish old school for senior housing

Central Manitoulin council has turned down an offer from a Sudbury-based company to retrofit the Old Mindemoya School into senior housing units.

Friends of the Mindemoya Old School treasurer Alison McAllister says they thought that Canadian Building Incorporated’s offer to repurpose the Mindemoya Old School by investing around $1.2-million dollars for up to eight-unit seniors’ apartments was a worthwhile endeavour.

She says two days later, council followed through with the recommendation rejecting the offer despite over 34 letters of support and emails from the wider community but did not state any reasons why they said no to the deal.

With the rejection, McAllister says the Friends will continue with their business plan to present to council in their efforts to save the building.
