Inaugural run honours memory of a local teen

The Algoma Family Services Foundation says it is hosting its inaugural marathon event in memory of a Sault Ste. Marie teen.

The foundation says three different events in one will be offered in honour of Brett Provenzano who took his own life on June 26th, 2010.

He was 15 years old.

A well-known hockey player and community volunteer, Provenzano also suffered with mental illness, which he was unable to overcome.

The foundation focuses on mental health and related services, so the funds raised from the 21-, 42- and 61-kilometre events will help finance those services.

The event kicks off this Saturday and can take place over two weeks with participants walking or running the routes.

Due to COVID-19, the AFS Foundation Run for Mental Health will accept any donations pledged online with plans to make the event an annual one in June of every year.

Beginning this year, and with the help of the Provenzano family, June 26 will be a day for raising awareness and funds to help local youth who are struggling with mental health challenges, while celebrating Brett and the lasting impact his life had on our community.

As a first-time event, there is no set cost to participate. Participation will be by donation or individuals can choose to raise pledges. Donation receipts will be provided for any amount donated over $20. Register and/or donate online at www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/algoma-family-services-foundation or email [email protected] for more information.
