A Garden of Hearts in Memory of Aboriginal Children

This year, National Aboriginal History Month has taken on a whole new meaning with the finding of 215 children’s graves in British Columbia.

Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l’Ontario communication director Carole Dubé says in the wake of the news and to continue to educate students about the realities of Aboriginal people, École publique Franco-Nord in Azilda held a “garden of hearts” ceremony last Friday to commemorate the children.

Connor Lafortune from the Dokis First Nation was also in attendance and performed a mini smudge ceremony in honour of the children of Kamloops.

Dubé says in the memory of the children, the École Franco-Nord team hung 215 hearts on tree branches on the school grounds.
