Funding available for searching for bodies at former residential school sites

The federal government says it will be opening up a 27-million-dollar fund to indigenous groups, to help them search for the bodies of children at former residential school sites.

It follows the discovery of the remains of 215 children in a mass grave at a former school in Kamloops in British Columbia

The money was set aside two years ago, but discussions over how it was to be used have been ongoing since then.

Crown Indigenous Relations Minster Carolyn Bennett says there are no strings attached.

She says it’s been made clear to them that communities want these investigations to be indigenous-led.
