Elliot Lake council recycling asphalt stockpile

Elliot Lake council has approved recycling part of its existing old asphalt stockpile for use throughout the city.

The asphalt will be used on trails and lighter traffic areas, such as the ski hill and beaches with the rest being moved to the public works yard for use in the future.

At last night’s council meeting, Public Works Director Darryl Halloch says over the past 30 years, old torn-up asphalt has been stockpiled behind the dog park.

He says an engineering drone survey was done in April after being ordered by the Ministry of Environment to come up with an action plan for disposal.

Halloch says recycling the material is the best way to go.

The material is recycled and can be used on less trafficked areas such as parking lots and walking trails, and it also saves money instead of having to buy new asphalt.

Council passed a motion to accept a contract of nearly $102,000 for Gilbertson Enterprise, a company from St. Joseph Island that specializes in the crushing, screening and stockpiling of old asphalt.

The next step will be designating the areas where the recycled asphalt will be installed.
