Elliot Lake and Blind River hosting Alzheimer’s Walk

People from the Blind River area have travelled to Elliot Lake to take part in the annual East Algoma Alzheimer’s Society Walk, but this year it will be different.

Society outreach coordinator Rando Lacko says last year, the walk was held in late January and raised $7,800, but this year, Blind River will host its own event, and both will be virtual.

Lacko says individuals can choose their own way of raising funds, such as biking, walking, or other activities while social distancing can be included.

She adds all funds raised locally stay local to support people with Alzheimer’s, their families, and programs

Lacko adds walk organizers are asked to encourage people to challenge themselves to take 240,000 steps in the month of May, out of respect for the 240,000 people living with dementia in Ontario. You can also set your own goal.

To register online as an individual or to add a virtual team you can go to the website https://support.alzheimer.ca/site/SPageServer?pagename=wfa15_home&s_locale=en_CA

Lackos says participants can share their pictures of how they will be participating on social media to raise public awareness.

Use hashtag #IGWalkForAlz or hashtag #alzstepchallenge.
