Nominations now open for Assembly of First Nations election

Perry Bellegarde, the Grand Chief of the Assembly of First Nations announced earlier this Spring that he would not be seeking re-election on July 7th.

The assembly says nominations are now open for the position, and Alvin Fiddler, the Grand Chief of Nishnawbe Aski Nation says the organization needs transformative change, and he wants to lead the charge.

Fiddler declared his candidacy last week in a press release stating the COVID-19 pandemic has made it clear drastic changes are needed in health care, including clean water, housing, and care of elders.

He adds he believes strongly in ensuring First Nations peoples achieve full equity in all aspects of society, and that children are protected and given the best start in life.

Fiddler’s home community is Muskrat Dam First Nation, but he currently lives with his family in Thunder Bay.

First elected as N.A.N chief in 2015, he brings decades of experience to the position having served several terms as deputy chief and within his home community.

The Assembly will take place virtually this year over two days, July 6th to 8th.
