Alert from OPP for Manitoulin Island

UPDATE: 10:00 PM: OPP ALERT LIFTED … OPP report that while they remain involved in an ongoing investigation in M’Chigeeng First Nation, the shelter in place has been cancelled. Police did not offer any other details and it is not yet known if the suspect has been apprehended.

UPDATE: 1:25pm: Police have confirmed the suspect is 32-year-old Victor Branco and are asking the public to avoid the area as the search is ongoing

Original story: An alert has gone out on phones across Northern Ontario at around 12:45 pm today, Saturday, alerting the public to a serious situation on Manitoulin Island.

The Manitoulin OPP alert states personnel are currently involved in an ongoing investigation in M’Chigeeng First Nation, which is the central part of Manitoulin Island.

The alert states police are dealing with an armed and dangerous situation in the community.

The OPP is advising everyone to avoid the area and for those living in the community to seek shelter and not go outside.

The public is also asked to stay off the main highways, especially Highways 540 and 551, which both run through the community.
