Haché addresses Laurentian University board

Laurentian University president Robert Haché says the worst is behind the institution and its insolvency process.

Haché made the statement to the board of governors adding two resolutions impacting retirees that were passed last Friday.

He says both the Retiree Health Benefit Plan and the Supplemental Retirement Plan were terminated, effective April 7th, adding all pensioners will still receive a monthly pension.

The university was back in court on Friday and is now waiting for a judgement as to whether the institution will get a stay of proceedings to continue the insolvency process and another $10-million dollars to keep it afloat.

Last Friday marked the last day of work for some of the faculty impacted by job cuts made earlier in the month and to show support for those workers, car rallies were held by the Scholar Strike group in Sudbury, Kitchener-Waterloo, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

The candlelight vigil planned for Friday evening in Sudbury was cancelled due to social distancing concerns.

Scholar Strike Canada originated as a labour action in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, to protest anti-Black, anti-Indigneous, racist and colonial police brutality in the U.S., Canada and elsewhere.

Over 3,000 Canadian university workers signed our solidarity statement and took part in historic labour action that took place on September 9-10, 2020.
