Small gathering planned for Day of Mourning

Espanola’s Domtar Mill will be hosting a small gathering tomorrow for this year’s Day of Mourning ceremony.

Union Leader Joanne Lamothe says due to COVID-19, there will be few union and mill workers taking part in the laying of flowers in the morning.

Elliot Lake Mayor Dan Marchisella and Councillor Ed Pearce will be at the Miners Memorial site at 11:00 am tomorrow, but they will not be unveiling the six new names for the monument, which usually coincides with the Day of Mourning every year.

Rather, they will acknowledge the day and the unveiling of the names has been deferred to June.

In 1984, the Canadian Labour Congress established April 28th as the National Day of Mourning in Canada to remember and honour those who have died, been injured or suffered illness in the workplace and is recognized in some 100 countries worldwide.
