The issue of nuclear energy has come up in Algoma Manitoulin during the election campaign. Liberal candidate Craig Hughson says voters need to worry about NDP attacks on the nuclear industry. Hughson says voters haven’t forgotten how the NDP cancelled the uranium contracts and effectively closed the Elliot Lake mines. In response, NDP incumbent Mike Mantha says the start of the cancellations began while Liberal David Peterson was premier. He says the NDP provided funding to keep Stanleigh Mine operating until 1996 and gave money to help Elliot Lake and the region to diversify. On energy, Mantha says before the NDP commits to expanding nuclear, it wants to know what other power choices are available. He says considering Quebec produces cheap energy, one option is to buy our energy from there.
