A message in a bottle … distracted walking and texting

The death of a young man has united two families through a message in a bottle.

Twenty-three-year-old Brandon Walli of Flamborough, Ontario was hit by a car while walking along Highway six in October 2016.

His father, Tom, believes the accident occurred when he was looking at his phone.

The same year as the tragedy, Tom and his family put a “message in a bottle” and tossed it in Lake Huron near his family’s camp on Manitoulin Island sharing an emotional message of their loss.

Last week, the bottle was found by the Carrigan-Poulton Family.

They were so moved they posted a message online, connecting with Tom two days later.

Tom says his employer, Geotab Incorporated, has assisted him in raising awareness of distracted walking and texting through the Phones Down, Eyes Up virtual concert they founded three years ago in Brandon’s memory raising funds for scholarships.

They have also created a video warning people of the dangers of distractions while walking or driving.
