Rainbow District School Board reports more COVID-19 cases
In-person learning has been cancelled at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School on Monday, March 1st as Rainbow District School Board assesses the impact of COVID-19.
In an abundance of caution, classes will be delivered remotely, where possible.
Updates about the remainder of the week will be shared with students and families.
Public Health Sudbury & Districts has directed that Algonquin Road Public School be closed to and including March 12th due to an outbreak of COVID-19.
Jean Hanson Public School has also been dismissed to and including March 12.
As a result, the following satellite sites will be closed – SHILO, the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program (CAMHP) at Health Sciences North and the Intensive Support Program (ISP) at Lockerby Composite School.
School staff will reach out to affected students and families to provide remote learning.
Public Health continues to investigate and monitor the situation.
All students, staff, and essential visitors who attend either school are advised to self-isolate and to contact a COVID-19 assessment centre to make arrangements to get tested as soon as possible.
The dismissal of the schools is in addition to specific classrooms being dismissed earlier this week and follows COVID-19 outbreak declarations at Jean Hanson Public School on Saturday and Algonquin Public School yesterday.|
École Alliance St-Joseph in Chelmsford will be closed until next Friday due to a COVID-19 case.
Outbreak declared at Sudbury apartment building complex
Public Health Sudbury and Districts has declared a COVID-19 outbreak at the Balmoral Apartment complex on Bruce Street.
The first notice, posted by Sudbury Housing Corporation, informed residents that someone living there who might have COVID-19 was put up on Friday.
The second notice, posted on Saturday by Public Health, stated an outbreak has been declared at the building while the third notice offered onsite COVID-19 testing for tenants and staff yesterday.
A look at the local COVID-19 numbers …
Greater Sudbury has seen a jump in COVID-19 positive cases over the weekend.
Public Health Sudbury & Districts has confirmed 24 new cases, 11 on Saturday, 13 on Sunday, all in Greater Sudbury.
Most are confirmed as close cases or outbreak-related.
Considering resolved cases, there are 53 active cases in the health agency’s jurisdiction.
Health Sciences North has 12 people admitted for COVID.
Of the five confirmed cases, one is in intensive care while the other seven are awaiting test results.
Of the seven, two are in the intensive care unit.
Algoma Public Health is reporting three new cases of COVID-19 from Elliot Lake and area.
Considering resolved cases, there are six active cases with two individuals in hospital.
Another unwelcome milestone …
Ontario crossed another COVID-19 threshold yesterday.
With just over one-thousand new cases reported, there have now been more than 300-thousand diagnoses in our province since the pandemic began a year ago.
Another 20 deaths were also reported, increasing the toll to almost seven-thousand.
There are now more than 600 people being treated in hospital…..almost half are in intensive care.
Another 50 cases have been identified as the more-contagious variants of concern….increasing the total to 558 so far.
Provincial health officials forecast that these variants will make up 40 percent of new COVID-19 cases by the middle of March.
Two health regions in lockdown
Two health regions are under Grey-Lockdown restrictions as of this morning.
The province ordered the Simcoe-Muskoka and Thunder Bay regions into the strictest level of restrictions after surges in COVID-19 case numbers…..especially those involving the variants of concern.
Among the limits now in effect…..no in-person dining at restaurants and bars, and essential retailers like grocery stores limited to 50 per cent capacity.
Postal workers refuse to service apartment blocks
Canada Post has suspended mail delivery to two large apartment blocks in Toronto because some residents aren’t wearing face masks in the common areas where the mailboxes are located.
The Crown Corporation tells the CBC that it’s a risk to the health of its employees.
Residents have to drive to a local postal station to pick up their mail.
The company that owns the buildings is urging all residents to obey the current health protocols, adding it will raise the issue with Canada Post and their local MP.
