WE charity allegations made …

A New Democrat MP is joining the call for an RCMP investigation into the controversial WE charity.

Ontario’s Charlie Angus says the Canada Revenue Agency should also be involved in looking into the charity’s finances, after what he called “explosive allegations” at a committee hearing late last week.

American TV journalist Reed Cowan told the Commons ethics committee that he raised millions of dollars for the charity in memory of his four-year-old son, who died in 2006.

Cowan says he was told he had funded a new school in Kenya, and a plaque bearing his son’s name had been erected.

But he found out later that the school had been named for another donor.

Cowan says he has yet to receive an accounting from the charity as to how the money he raised has been spent.

In a statement issued yesterday, WE charity says it’s confident that its actions were appropriate, and any investigation would come to the same conclusion.
