Wiikwemkoong police chief will plead not guilty

The chief of police of the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service will plead not guilty to a sexual assault charge, according to his legal representation.

Terry McCaffery was charged with one count of sexual assault by the OPP last Wednesday following an investigation into the allegation.

His lawyer says McCaffery will be pleading not guilty to the charge and they will vigorously defend the matter in a court of law.

The OPP launched the investigation into the allegation last year after an individual came forward about an incident that occurred in 2019.

Anyone with any information is asked to call OPP or Crime Stoppers.

Staff Sergeant Greg Mishibinijima has been appointed as acting chief of police until the board names an interim officer to fill the role.  Duke Peltier, chief of Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, said he would not be providing an official statement about this matter since the matter is now in the courts, but did say they will rely on the justice system and the community respects the process set out by the OPP.
