The CORONAVIRUS REPORT for Friday, January 22, 2021 – another death at senior’s home, more cases, high schools reopening

Public Health Sudbury & Districts is reporting seven new cases of COVID-19 and another death at the Amberwood Suites Home in Greater Sudbury.

This is the fifth resident death associated with the outbreak.

According to the agency, of the seven new cases, one is due to an ongoing outbreak, another is due to close contact with another individual and the five others are under investigation.

The new cases are all in the Greater Sudbury area.

Today’s cases bring the total number of active cases to 70 within the agency’s jurisdiction.

Health Sciences North’s Jason Turnbull says as of noon yesterday, the hospital had nine patients admitted who have tested positive for COVID-19, but none of them are in intensive care.

He says three other newly admitted patients are currently being tested and awaiting results with one of those patients in intensive care.

Algoma Public Health says as of yesterday afternoon, there are no new cases and there are 28 active cases in the Algoma District.

The agency also states in-person learning is permitted to resume in Sault Ste. Marie high schools next Monday.

The health unit adds students and parents are encouraged to visit the website of their school for more information.
