Coronavirus triage

The provincial government has set out rules for patient care, should hospitals become overwhelmed by COVID-19 cases.

The document, sent out last Wednesday, says those with a 20 per cent, or greater, chance of surviving 12 months should be prioritized for care under a Level One scenario.

In the worst situation, at Level Three, only those with a 70 per cent chance of surviving a year would get immediate help.

NDP leader Andrea Horwath says the document shows the provincial government needs to do far more, if we’re to avoid an even greater tragedy.

She’s calling for stronger lockdown measures, paid sick leave, more staff in long-term care homes, and greater testing in the workplace and in schools.

A look at the numbers …

Our province’s chief medical officer of health says he’s encouraged by the most recent testing numbers in Ontario.

Doctor David Williams says yesterday’s positive rate where 6.6 per cent of tests came back positive is lower than it usually is on a Monday.

He says it’s a sign that Ontarians are doing what we’re supposed to be doing.

But he adds case numbers must drop below one-thousand before any restrictions are eased.

There were almost 26-hundred new diagnoses announced yesterday, the lowest daily total in more than two weeks.

A new hospital opening up

A new hospital, set to open in Vaughn, north of Toronto, will prioritize COVID-19 patients.

The facility, the first new hospital to open in our province in more than three decades, will take some of the pressure off the medical system in hard-hit areas in southern Ontario.

Premier Doug Ford adds the province is also establishing another 500 hospital beds in Toronto, Durham, Ottawa, and Kingston.
