Free food giveaway feeds hundreds

It is estimated that over 1,800 people received free food as part of a massive food giveaway organized through Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes and the Massey Agricultural Society as well as other partners.

Hughes says on Saturday four transports arrived in the early morning to set up distribution stations to give away over 85,000 tons of food to families along the North Shore corridor.

She says the society provided the fairgrounds and many of the volunteers to hand out the food and PPE to over 300 vehicles, as well as several horses and buggy visitors.

Hughes estimates that over 450 families benefited from the giveaway and thanks to the partners and volunteers for coordinating the distribution, even more, important with so many people facing challenges due to COVID-19.

Hughes says the society, Barney’s Bargain Barn, Second Harvest, United Way Centraide North East Ontario, Cornerstone Christian Assembly, RONA Sonnenburg Hardware Ltd, Township of Sables-Spanish Rivers, Poirier Clover Farm, Poirier’s Confectionary and Pizza, Chute’s Confectionery and The Moose all partnered together to bring the free giveaway to the North Shore.

She extends a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone who benefited from the generosity of so many to make the Christmas season a little brighter. Photos by Carol Hughes
