Integrity Report- Sables-Spanish Rivers Township Mayor asked to resign following death threat

The Mayor of Sables-Spanish Rivers is being asked to resign after making a death threat to town employees.

Integrity Commissioner Aurel Malo was unable to hear the complaint due to a conflict of interest and asked IC Robert Swayze to step in.

Swayze told council in his report Wednesday that a complaint had been made by Deputy Mayor Glenda Massicotte about Mayor Leslie Gamble’s failure to declare a pecuniary interest in regards to property he owned and attempting to influence the vote on a Drainage Act matter in connection with that land.

Swayze says he also received a report that Gamble had gone to the township office on August 12th and said to the clerk’s assistant, “I have a gun and two bullets one for (pointing to the clerk administrator’s chair and one for (pointing again, this time at the former manager of finance’s chair).”

Swayze says he immediately stopped the investigation and called OPP, who investigated the matter. The OPP determined that there was no immediate danger and closed the investigation.

With the threat and other complaints of intimidation, Swayze recommended that Gamble’s pay be suspended for 90 days, but council has the right to add sanctions of their own, which they did.

Council passed a motion accepting the sanction and demanded an apology from Gamble as well as his immediate resignation. They also added that If he refuses to resign, his privileges to township property be for council meetings only.

Gamble was not in attendance at the meeting.
