Seniors can access free grocery store gift cards

DiversityCanada is offering free grocery store gift cards to seniors in several communities to alleviate some of the financial stress due to COVID-19.

Celia Sankar, the foundation’s executive director says the agency is working with the federal government’s Emergency Community Support Fund to provide cards worth at least $200 each to some 200 seniors.

She adds the cards are available to seniors in the Township of the North Shore, Elliot Lake, Blind River and Spanish.

Seniors can fill out forms at Lyle’s No Frills in Elliot Lake or Hutton’s Valu-Mart in Blind River, call in or register online by the October 31st deadline.

Seniors do not have to do anything to receive the gift card other than to apply and meet the eligibility criteria.

They will have to provide ID.

The distribution of the gift cards is to be completed before November 30th.

Seniors can apply for the cards by filling out a paper form at the grocery stores and dropping it in the boxes provided at those stores.

Seniors can also apply online or call 705-827-1001 and leave a message with their name and phone number.
