A look at the numbers from Sunday

Health Minister Christine Elliott’s office says the government will be watching the situation closely in the next few days, as the number of COVID-19 cases in Ontario continues to rise.

Provincial health officials reported a record-high number of new diagnoses yesterday, at one-thousand and 42.

The majority of cases were found in the four provincial hotspots, three of which were put back to modified Stage Two restrictions just over two weeks ago.

Officials say those measures should show results, if they’ve been effective,  sometime this week.

The Health Ministry says the spike is concerning and it’s urging Ontarians not to let down their guard in following the recommendations on physical distancing and social contacts.

South of the border

President Donald Trump’s chief of staff says they’re not going to be able to control the spread of the coronavirus across the United States.

Mark Meadows says, instead, the Trump administration is concentrating on the development of vaccines and other therapies to mitigate its impact.

About 225-thousand Americans have died of the virus, the world’s highest toll and infection rates continue to surge across many regions, with more than 8.5-million cases having been reported.

The White House is also facing a second outbreak, with five people close to Vice-President Mike Pence testing positive.
