Traffic slowdown today on Highway 17 Serpent River FN to Mississauga FN

A traffic slowdown in support of Indigenous fishing rights is planned for this morning along Highway 17.

East Algoma OPP Constable Phil Young says Serpent River and Mississauga First Nations are hosting a peaceful moving slowdown at Pronto Road to show their support of Mi’Kmaw fishing rights.

A group of Nova Scotia Mi’Kmaw fishermen is operating a small-scale fishery in the area, outside of the usual lobster season.

Their processing plant was burned to the ground on Saturday, in a fire that police say is suspicious.

Young says there are no traffic detours in the area, so motorists are asked to plan for the slowdown, which begins at 10:00 am.

Members of the OPP and Mississauga First Nation police will be assisting with traffic safety.

The travelling public is advised to possibly expect delays and is encouraged to exercise patience and safe driving habits. There is no traffic re-routes around this area. The motoring public is asked to refrain from contacting the OPP Communications Centre for Road Closure Information. Road Closure Information can be obtained by contacting the Ministry of Transportation at 1-800-268-4686.
