The passing of former trustee Gerald Beerkens has been acknowledged by the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board.
Board chair Lindsay Liske says Beerkens, a native of Holland who emigrated to Wawa, died on October 8th.
He says Beerkens was not only a former high school teacher but also a long-time trustee of the Michipicoten school board starting in 1973.
Liske adds he was instrumental in the amalgamation of the board in 1998 and served as a vice-chair and chair for several terms.

He says Beerken’s service was recognized with the presentation of the Ontario School Trustees Association Award of Merit in 2013.
Liske adds the board acknowledges his contributions to education and extends their condolences to his family and friends.
