A look at the numbers – one more case in Sudbury, nearly 800 in Ontario

Sudbury Public Health is reporting another case of COVID-19, this one related to travel.

The case is located in the Greater Sudbury area and is self-isolating.

It is Case #110 in the Sudbury Region.

Meanwhile, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health says the alarm bells are ringing louder and louder.

Doctor David Williams’ comments come as our province set a new daily record for COVID-19 cases, with 797 new diagnoses reported yesterday.

The majority of new cases are, once again, in the Greater Toronto and Ottawa areas.

But Doctor Williams notes caseloads are also rising in other areas of the province as well.

An increasing proportion of tests are coming back positive, showing community spread of the virus is on the rise.

And while the proportion of those under 40 testing positive continues to decline, the latest numbers show they’re infecting more people in other age groups.

Hospitalizations also continue to increase, with 205 people now being treated, 47 in intensive care.

Doctor Williams says contact tracing of confirmed cases is increasingly difficult, with some people reporting up to 100 contacts in the days prior to their diagnoses despite experts’ advice that we limit
our social circles.

Williams says he’s recommended new measures be put in place, but adds it’s up to the cabinet to decide.

The cabinet is to hold a special meeting later this morning.
