Three cases of COVID – two in Algoma District, one in Sudbury, a look at the numbers and more …

Cambrian College’s Barrydowne campus remains open following a report of a positive COVID-19 case.

Cambrian spokesperson Dan Lessard says the college was informed about the case on Monday adding the individual was last on campus on September 30th.

He adds they do not live on campus and are self-isolating.

He would not say if the person is a student or faculty member adding they will not be shutting down.

Lessard adds Public Health Sudbury & Districts has been contacted to assist with the contact tracing and all the areas have been sanitized on campus.

Meanwhile, Algoma Public Health is reporting two new cases both considered community spread from southern Ontario.

Case #36 and #37 are in the Sault Ste. Marie area and are in self-isolation.

A look at the numbers

Provincial health officials are reporting a slight drop in the number of new COVID-19 cases in Ontario.

There were 548 new diagnoses yesterday, down from Monday’s 615.

More than half were in people between the ages of 20 and 39.

Seven more deaths were also recorded, the highest daily total since mid-July.

The number of backlogged tests is down again, but there are still more than 55-thousand people still awaiting their results.

The provincial government is now sending some of the tests to a firm in California to help clear up the backlog.

Cases in the schools

Coronavirus cases in schools across the province continue to increase.

There were 74 new infections reported yesterday, 41 students, ten staff, and 23 whose identities haven’t been confirmed.

There are now 347 schools in Ontario reporting at least one coronavirus case, about seven percent of the total number across the province.

Ford spending quiet Thanksgiving

After some confusion, Premier Doug Ford says he’ll be holding a Thanksgiving dinner this weekend only with members of his household.

During his briefing yesterday, Ford said he’d be keeping the dinner small, within the ten-person indoor limit set by his government.

But health officials have been urging people to shrink their social bubbles even further, keeping Thanksgiving celebrations to those who live under the same roof.

Ford later clarified that he, too, will be following that guideline.

If there is an election

Canada’s chief electoral officer wants Parliament to pass a new law in case a federal election is held during the pandemic.

Stephane Perrault wants the power to hold an election over two weekend days, instead of on the traditional Monday…..and decide how to administer the vote in long-term care homes.

While elections are usually held every four years, the current Liberal government is in a minority situation and could be defeated at any time.
