Elliot Lake council approves lighting contract for airport

Elliot Lake council believes it is a good move to put in a modernized lighting system at the airport.

The city’s public works director Daryl Halloch told council the contract for $316,400 would be with Approach Navigation Systems Ltd. of Moncton, New Brunswick for a solar powered runway lighting system at the Elliot Lake Airport.

In his report, he states most of the lighting system is located underground, but with age, it is 37 years old, some of the lights are no longer functional and difficult to replace.

He says a power study was carried out recommending solar-powered LED lights since they would eliminate the use of underground cables and transformers.

Halloch adds the energy cost savings would cover the cost of batteries that come with a full five-year warranty and are certified by Transport Canada.

Council unanimously agreed to the upgrade.
