COVID REPORT – 100th case in Manitoulin District, test centres by appointment only and more

COVID-19 Case #100 in Manitoulin District

The Sudbury and Manitoulin Districts has reached an unwelcome milestone with 100 cases of COVID-19.

Public Health Sudbury & Districts says there has been another case of COVID-19, which involved travel.

However, this case is in the Manitoulin District, although the unit is not specifying where, what gender or age.
Through contact tracing, Public Health will notify all close contacts directly.

The case is localized and the person is self-isolating.

Local COVID-19 test centres require appointments

A look at the number … big surge

It’s another big surge in COVID-19 cases in our province.

There were 315 new diagnoses reported across Ontario yesterday, the highest daily number since June 6th.

There are now more than 25-hundred active cases, 44 of them are being treated in hospital, with 20 in intensive care.

The Greater Toronto area and Ottawa continue to be the hotspots, accounting for 80 per cent of the new infections.

More than 60 per cent were found in people under the age of 40.

Two new deaths were also reported yesterday, increasing the toll to 28-hundred and 22.

Are coronavirus rollbacks likely?

The provincial government could announce the rollback of some parts of the Stage Three recovery program later today.

Premier Doug Ford says regions, where COVID-19 cases are surging, could see limits on social gatherings reduced to help slow the spread of the virus.

Provincial rules currently allow 50 people at indoor gatherings, and 100 for outdoor events.

But a key provision, making sure you maintain physical distancing or wearing a mask at these gatherings, is not being followed in many cases.

Ford is also promising what he terms “the highest fines in Canada” for those caught violating the rules.

First school closed due to COVID-19

A high school in Pembroke, northwest of Ottawa, has become the first in the province to be closed due to a COVID-19 outbreak.

The area’s medical officer of health ordered the closure after a third staff member tested positive.

The school houses more than 650 students and 55 staff.

The closure will remain in effect until public health officials give the OK.

Students will continue their studies on-line.
