PUC customers in the Espanola and Sault Ste. Marie service areas are being warned about a phone scam.
PUC Services Ltd. Corporate communications manager, Katie Elliot, says the scam involves a caller threatening to cut off customers’ power unless they receive an immediate payment by credit card or other banking means.
She stresses PUC never asks for payments by wire transfer or credit card not do they ask for banking information over the phone.
Elliot advises anyone receiving such a call not to give any personal or banking information out on the phone and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre immediately.
She adds any customers who have concerns about their account, should contact them directly.
Call the Customer Experience team at 705-759-6522 or 705-759-6555 for after hour emergencies. For information on how PUC customers can pay their bills, including e-billing, visit www.ssmpuc.com. Customers should report fraudulent calls to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
