Elliot Lake moving ahead with Community Hub project

It was reported by The Moose earlier this week that Elliot Lake had been turned down for funding by the province for the new Community Recreational Hub.

Mayor Dan Marchisella said yesterday he has instructed the Ad Hoc Committee to reconvene as soon as possible and to report back to the council with recommendations on alternative funding, finance options and building methods.

He says the city has no choice as the existing buildings including the pool and arena badly need replacing.

Marchisella says maintaining city properties cost over one million dollars last year and those costs are only expected to go up.

He says it is vitally important the city go ahead with research and planning for building a new centre in the city.

Council was disappointed Monday evening to find out that Elliot Lake was not going to receive any of the larger envelope ICIP funding for the proposed Recreation Hub, less than two years after the province had already approved the project. Council and staff are still dedicated to the project as all recognize that this isn’t just a want but a need for both the physical and mental health of our residents. The complex will play a vital role in the social well-being of our citizens and add economic benefits to the community.
