The Sudbury Superstack turns another chapter in its history

After 50 years of active service, Sudbury’s Superstack has been decommissioned and deconstruction will begin.

On Friday Vale announced in a press release that the 381-metre stack at its Copper Cliff Complex in Sudbury was shut down as part of regular maintenance.

Vale says it has now finished tying in the flue system to two smaller, 137-metre stacks that have been erected in its place.

Construction of those new stacks was completed last year.

Before taking apart the structure, there will be a two-month transition period, during which the stack will remain on standby as a backup.

Once that period is over, the piece-by-piece dismantling of the Superstack will take place, a process that is expected to take a few years.

The iconic structure was built 50 years ago and will be taken apart from the top to bottom by an outside company knowledgeable in such work.
