Eight new confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported by Public Health Sudbury & Districts

There are eight new positive cases of COVID-19 being reported by Public Health Sudbury & Districts.

Dr. Penny Sutcliffe, the Medical Officer of Health, says the eight cases put everyone on alert that catching COVID-19 continues to be a risk.

She says all eight cases were reported in the Greater Sudbury area, and of that, seven are individuals who are 19 years of age or younger with the eighth being in their 30s.

She says none of the eight are hospitalized but all are self-isolating.

Sutcliffe says the virus simply cannot spread easily if people limit travel, stay within social circles, keep their distance and wear face coverings, wash hands, and stay home and call for testing when they don’t feel well.

It is really that simple to keep our health and our economy afloat, stresses Sutcliffe.

The provincial picture

Premier Doug Ford is criticizing those he’s calling, ”yahoos,” for attending a massive house party in Brampton, west of Toronto.

About 200 people were sent home after police were called in to break up the party late Saturday night.

The organizer had arranged for security to park cars and had put up barriers to prevent people from seeing into the yard.

Ford says it’s unbelievable and disappointing that so many people would feel able to violate provincial limits on gatherings to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Our province reported 119 new COVID-19 cases yesterday once again, the majority were in people under the age of 40.

Of the almost 39-thousand people who have contracted the virus so far, about 89 percent have recovered.

There was also one additional death reported, bringing the total to 27-hundred and 64.

A decision is expected tomorrow on when Toronto, Peel Region, and Windsor-Essex might join the rest of the province in Stage Three of the provincial recovery program.

Around the world

Several countries are re-imposing restrictions after suffering another surge in COVID-19 infections.

Hong Kong is now requiring that face masks be worn in public, and gatherings have been limited to no more than two people.

Australia’s Victoria state is reporting another daily record in the number of new infections, and state officials are warning that a six-week lockdown of the city of Melbourne’s five-million people could be extended.

Japan’s government is urging business leaders to ramp up anti-virus measures, such as staggered shifts, and increase the number of people working from home to levels achieved during the state of emergency in place during the spring.

There have been 16-and-a-half million coronavirus cases across the globe, with the United States accounting for more than a quarter of them.
