Forest fires under control

Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry water bombers were put to full use over the weekend with five fires in the local districts flaring up Saturday.

The MNRF reports four were in the Sudbury district and one in the Killarney area.

A fire between McKerrow and Webbwood took nearly eight hours but was brought under control, thanks to the involvement of all four local fire departments, emergency personnel and the water bombers.

Highway 17 was closed for more than five hours and some residents in the Webbwood area had to be evacuated.

Sunday’s rain did little to ease the dry conditions in the bush.

The MNRF does not state how the fires started, but are asking the public to be extra cautious.
