SPORTS: ELSS sends five swimmers to OFSAA

The Elliot Lake High School swim team of Alyssa Hebert, Gareth Hebert, Kyle Beaulieu, Owen Parsons and Emma Young represented the Northern Ontario Region at the provincials.

It was held this year at the Pan Am Sports Complex in Toronto on March 3rd and 4th.

The swim team competed with 2,000 fellow competitors from across Ontario improving their personal best times and making their school proud.

Emma swam a solid 100m backstroke earning a top-20 provincial finish.

Kyle brought his ‘A’ game, shaving six seconds off his personal best in the 200m freestyle event. Owen proved he was a sprinter and swam hard in the 50m freestyle event completing his swim in 30sec.

Gareth earned a top-20 finish for the province in the 100m freestyle event.

Alyssa swimming as a para-athlete had the drive and strength to swim in two events.

In the 50m freestyle event, her efforts placed her in the top 15, following that up; her 100m freestyle swim saw her finish in the top seven for the event.

Team publicist, Shawn Beaulieu says it was truly an honour and accomplishment for each of their athletes as the atmosphere was nothing less than overwhelming. He adds community support and spirit helped the team succeed. The team would also like to send thanks to the coaches and staff who chaperoned and supported them.
