The 15th annual Technological Skills Competition hosted by the Rainbow District School Board will take place at two venues: Cambrian College in Sudbury and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners in Azilda.
The board’s Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program Coordinator, Dana Kinsella, says they are expecting around 100 students today who will take part in a wide variety of competition from carpentry to small engines, coding to photography, and more.
She adds events in the skilled trades that give students the opportunity to problem-solve, think creatively and explore careers at an early age.
Kinsella says the winners will receive medals and the right to represent at the upcoming Skills Ontario Competition in Toronto in May.
“We are reaching minds through innovative and challenging learning experiences, and touching hearts by engaging students in activities that fuel their passion and support student success,” adds Kinsella.
Carpentry events, including Home Building – Team of 4, and Carpentry – Team of 2, will take place at the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners Local 2486 in Azilda.
Staff from both venues will provide judges.
Participants will have an opportunity to go home with medals and certificates of achievement to celebrate their success. The awards ceremony will begin at 3:00 pm at both locations. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend.
Rainbow District School Board salutes the many staff members who work diligently to make this event possible every year. The Board also acknowledges the generosity of community partners, who contribute financially for the local competitions, new tools and transportation for students to compete at the Skills Ontario Competition.
