Federal government testing seat belts on school buses

The Sudbury District will host a pilot project to introduce three-point seatbelts on school buses.

The federal government task force looking into improving bus safety says Sudbury was chosen because of the interest expressed by the Sudbury Student Services Consortium, which transports children to school in Espanola, Massey and the Sudbury area.

The consortium was formed in 2001 as a partnership of the four school boards transporting over 20,000 students on 397 buses.

The seatbelts will be added to a limited number of new buses ordered as part of the consortium’s fleet.

Another test site will also be selected in British Columbia in the near future.
