A new tool, the Canadian Indigenous Cognitive Assessment, is expected to change how dementia is diagnosed in aging Indigenous peoples.
Developed on Manitoulin Island over the last few years, it is now ready for Anishnabek across Canada.
Community Researcher, Karen Pitawanakwat says the diagnostic tool was developed using Anishinabek language, knowledge and the way that their people understand the world they live in today.
She adds it is one of many steps into a future world where they can bridge worlds of knowledge to support people and their families who are living with dementia.
The tool is an adapted version of the Kimberly Indigenous Cognitive Assessment, developed by researchers at the Western Australia Centre for Health and Aging.
Plans are now underway to develop different versions for people in Canada.
