SPORTS: Elliot Lake Hosts regional swim meet

The Sault Surge Aquatic Club along with the Sudbury Laurentian Swim club battled the weather to join the Elliot Lake Aquatic Club at the Ruben Yli Juuti Aquatic centre on January 18-19. Combined there were over 70 swimmers on deck competing for best times and team honors. Equally important were the over 60 volunteers behind the scenes ensuring the athletes were able to swim uninterrupted vying for the honor to touch the wall first. Thank you to all who attended.

The host club showcased swimmers aged 5 to 17. For some, the home pool was their first opportunity to showcase their talent. 44 ELAC’ers suited up for the challenge of swimming for families and fans alike. Kendra B improved on her previous personal bests in each of her 6 events. Particularly by shaving 4 seconds from her 50m freestyle, finishing with 39.08sec, and 20sec off her 100m individual medley time. Kyle B also harnessed the home pool by improving his personal bests in each of his events. Particularly his 100m individual medley event by improving his PB by 19 sec.

Carter A was often seen smiling as big as life, proudly earning personal best times in all his events. Consistently the times recorded were 4 seconds better than previous. Way to go, Carter, keep up the effort and enthusiasm.

Owen A was also a member of the local club that showed no slowing over the weekend, consistently posting times improved by 4 seconds. Particularly for his effort in the 200m freestyle event, improving by 9 seconds. Great job Owen.

Reilly M equally showed no quit as she finished each of her swims ahead of her competitors on the timesheet. Particularly for her 100m breaststroke in 1:51.49, improving by 15sec.

Ally W swam hard and earned personal bests for her efforts, particularly her 100m backstroke event. Finishing in 1:53.11, a 24-second improvement. Great result Ally.

Tie R reached the wall first in each of his 8 events including his 2 relays. Excellent teamwork and drive Tie.

Andie Y followed the home team wave of confidence and honor as she saw personal bests earned in each of her swims, including a 14-sec improvement for her 100m backstroke swim.

Capping off the weekend of swimming accolades and cheers, the relay team of Madelyn M, Kendra B, Reilly M, and Ava Y saw a team PB finishing their 200m freestyle relay in first for the club.

This Northeastern region developmental meet is the third of the year in the region which offers swimmers from all levels an opportunity to compete and showcase their talent. Coaching becomes apparent as the swimmers prove that their time and structure pays off. Without the countless hours in the pool and mentoring by the coaching staff, honors and accolades would not be achievable. A real statement was set for the expert coaching staff from our Elliot Lake Aquatic Club as witnessed by the caliber of results put up by our local swim club.
