NATIONAL: NAFTA needs support, United Kingdom election and recovering volcano victims

Free Trade Deal needs second party support

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he has personally promised U.S. President Donald Trump and Mexico’s President that Canada will ratify the new North American free trade deal as soon as possible.

But as a minority government, the Liberals are limited by their need for support from at least one other party.

Both the Conservatives and the NDP have expressed concerns about the deal, and have said they want to see what changes have been made before deciding one way or the other.

Voters head to the polls in England

Voters in the United Kingdom cast their ballots today to choose a new government.

Some polls have suggested Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservatives have a narrow lead over the main opposition Labour Party and its leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The election comes as the deadline looms for the UK to leave the European Union next month.

New Zealand to recover bodies – victims of a volcanic eruption

Hours after police said it was still too dangerous to retrieve the bodies of victims left on New Zealand’s White Island after Monday’s volcanic eruption, authorities are now saying recovery efforts will begin Friday.

The news comes as government scientists warn of continuing volcanic activity in the area, estimating a 50 to 60 percent likelihood of an eruption in the next 24 hours.

In addition to the eight bodies left on the island, eight other people were killed and dozens were severely burned by the blast of scalding steam and ash.
