Capital projects approved at Algoma District School Board meeting

Elliot Lake Secondary School is just one of nine schools that fall under the jurisdiction of the Algoma District School Board, which will see improvements this year.

On Tuesday night, the board gave its approval to $17.3-million dollars for capital projects in 2019-2020.

One of the other larger projects is an addition to Central Algoma Elementary School in Desbarats.

The projects will now go to tender and documents are available at the board office.

Two significant projects that are important to execute the Board’s capital plan are an addition to Central Algoma Elementary School and a new school in Blind River.  ADSB has received approval to tender the CAES project and hopes to have final approval from the Ministry for Blind River in the near future.

The Board will also be moving ahead to begin the tender process with capital projects at the following schools, as approved at Tuesday’s meeting:

•              Elliot Lake Secondary School

•              Echo Bay PS

•              White Pines Collegiate & Vocational School

•              Kiwedin PS

•              Central Algoma Secondary School

•              Tarentorus Public School

•              Korah Collegiate & Vocational School

•              Eastview PS

•              RM Moore PS

Of note, there is no flexibility with capital dollars, meaning that annual grant allocations received from the Ministry of Education for Capital Projects, are solely for the purpose of capital and cannot be diverted to other priorities. Any funds not expended in a given year are to be set aside and used for capital expenditures in future budget years. Total projects for potential award to contractors in 2019-20 are estimated to be $17.4 million excluding Capital Priority projects.
