Put down the phone judge says – mom goes to jail

A Sudbury woman is going to jail for what the judge calls distracted parenting.

According to Sudbury.com, the woman who is not identified under a publication ban was sentenced to nine months in jail to be served on weekends in connection to the death of her infant son in September 2017.

The woman was involved in a Facebook conversation in another room when her child drowned in the bathtub.

When sentencing the woman on Thursday, Judge John Keast (KEST) said the court must send a clear message to the parents of young vulnerable children that there will be serious consequences involving tragedies caused by what he coins distracted parenting.

He stated there was no urgency or necessity to the Facebook chat and given the fact a young child was left unsupervised in a bathtub, the 11-minute conversation can only be described as mindless.

She will begin serving her sentence tomorrow.
