Miners tested for aluminum in bones as part of McIntyre Powder initiative

McMaster University has tested the first of two groups of underground miners from Timmins to determine the levels of aluminum in their bones.

The miners travelled to Hamilton on October 22nd as part of the ongoing research into McIntyre Powder and the impact it may have had on miners exposed to the aluminum dust during their work underground.

Janice Martell of Elliot Lake who started the McIntyre Powder Project in 2015, connected with Dr. Fiona McNeill, a researcher whose work specializes in measuring exposure to toxic elements such as aluminum.

She says the study was first proposed in Vancouver in March 2017, during the 12th Keele Meeting on Aluminum, a symposium that brings scientific researchers together to talk about aluminum research.

Martell adds McMaster University has a specialized lab that can take measurements that looks at the whole, living organisms as opposed to using a sample of dead tissue for testing.

The second group of miners is expected to travel to Hamilton during the last week of October.
