New signage for Espanola draws some controversy

The Town of Espanola has a new modernized welcome sign that has attracted some controversy.

The new sign produced by Laird Signs of Iron Bridge is located prominently at the north entrance of town, is larger than its predecessor and features three languages of welcome.

However, some of the public on social media was wondering why the sign was not produced by local companies.

Town CAO Cynthia Townsend told The Moose the two local companies could not provide the type of sign they wanted whereas Laird Signs have the experience, design and construction skills they needed.

She points out both the town and local architect, Jennifer Harvey, have experience with this company and were satisfied they could meet job requirements and the timelines required for funding.

Townsend adds the project was not put out to tender but adds the town’s procurement policy does allow for that for certain special services.
