Serpent River’s First Nation’s new chief, Brent Bissaillion is an Anishinabe two-spirited man with an education in political science and Indigenous governance. Bissaillion won the election this past weekend with his platform Bringing Goodness and Strength to the Community. His seven-point platform emphasizes community spirit, an opportunity for community members, good governance, nationhood relationships, community safety, and security, improving infrastructure and bringing prosperity to the First Nation. He will be joined on council by seven re-elected band councillors: Steven Baranyai, Joey Jacobs, Michelle Owl, Nicole Pelletier-Southwind, Miranda Pelletier, Steve Meawasige and Shirley McLeod and five new councillors: Earl Commnda, Marlene Essex, Kerri Commanda and John Jack Trudeau. The Inauguration Ceremony is set for next Monday at 5:00 pm at the Lifestyle Centre, which will include a dinner followed by the swearing-in ceremony. The first official Chief and council meeting will be held on November 18th.
