Manitoulin teen addressing the United Nations climate summit

The only Canadian youth to be nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize this year is in New York talking about water and its’ importance to Mother Earth.

Fifteen-year-old Autumn Peltier of Wiikwemikong First Nation on Manitoulin Island has been nominated for the award by the David Suzuki Foundation, the only Canadian out of 137 nominees around the world.

The award winner will be announced on Monday.

Peltier is also the Anishnawbek Nation Chief Water Commissioner and in that role, she is addressing the United Nation’s Global Landscape Forum in New York this week.

Pelter says she will share knowledge of why Anishinaabe people are so protective of their waters, more so since Canadians are surrounded by the freshest water in the world, but it is at risk of being contaminated.
